Nightlife in Kathmandu
During the day, Kathmandu dissolves in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. By night, the busy city transforms into one of the grooviest hubs for those who seek entertainment. Lively concerts, pubs, nightclubs, parties, cinemas, and casinos appeal to hundreds of tourists and locals. A few of the best places to experience such lively nightlife scenes are Thamel, Durbarmarg, Lazimpat and Durbar square.
While the nightlife in some locations is vivacious, others need to abide by the early curfew, ie 22:00 pm. By law, any restaurant, cinemas, concerts, or businesses must not operate past 22:00 pm. In a conversation with Ram Krishna Chakradhar, the owner of ‘Jheegu Cafe Lounge and Bar in Basantapur, he said, “We normally take orders until 21:00 pm and we try to complete all the orders by 22:00 pm. During special occasions and festive days, we need to take a permit from the ‘Ministry of Home Affairs’ to extend our operations until midnight”. He added, “Violation of this law could lead to a fine, which we would rather avoid.”
Nightlife in Nepal had begun with the purpose of encouraging tourism. But the implementation of such law has had an adverse effect on tourism, especially during ‘Visit Nepal Year 2020’. According to the Nepal Tourism Board, in the year 2017 and 2018, there were 940,218 and 1,173,072 tourists visiting Nepal, respectively. There has been a growth of 200 thousand tourists every year. In order to cater to such a large number, nightlife without any kind of constraints is a must.
Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Yogesh Bhattarai appeals to the government to revive Kathmandu’s nightlife. On the current affairs, Minister Bhattarai remarked, “The capital goes to sleep at 6 pm in the evening. But, during the Visit Nepal Year 2020, let us make nightlife in Kathmandu alive again.”
A bill was passed in a meeting between ‘Kathmandu District Administration Office’, ‘Kathmandu Metropolitan City’, ‘Thamel Tourism Development Board’ and ‘Nepal Police’, to co-operate and let the areas open around the clock. One can enjoy the atmosphere of the vicinity until late hours.
Ram Sharan Thapaliya, former president of Thamel Tourism Development Council said, “If the shops and restaurants in Thamel and Durbarmarg were open around the clock, it could boost the operation of several businesses, from fast-food restaurants to garment stores. Not only that, but the night market could also double the employment count”. He added that removing such restriction could be the key to foster businesses that cater to tourists.
